Traditional squash blossom necklace
40" Total Length
Single Naja Pendant is 4" x 4"
Smaller Cabochons are 1" x 3"

  • Pendant (Naja): The large crescent-shaped pendant at the bottom is called a Naja, a key feature of squash blossom necklaces. This one includes four turquoise stones framed by silver leafwork.

  • Turquoise Stones: The necklace has a total of 14 turquoise cabochons, likely Kingman or Royston turquoise based on the vibrant blue-green matrix.

  • Silverwork: Notice the detailed leaf and rope designs, characteristic of high-quality Navajo silverwork. Each turquoise stone is hand-set in bezel settings.

  • Beads: The necklace strand is made of handmade silver beads ("Navajo pearls"), traditionally crafted by soldering and polishing each bead.

  • Origin: Almost certainly Navajo (Diné).

  • Era: The style suggests mid-20th century to present-day

The Naja symbol originated in Moorish Spain and made its way to the Southwest via Spanish influence. It symbolizes protection or spiritual well-being. The squash blossoms (silver pieces flaring out like petals) are symbolic of fertility and abundance.
